First Shefarers Parade, 2021
The patriarchal history of the sea is shaped by war, colonialism and exploitation. Hamburg port, too, stands in that tradition, and institutions such as HPA, Eurogate, Hapag Lloyd and many boat clubs are still male-dominated. Slowly, however, there is some movement: On all the Seven Seas, as well as in Hamburg, more and more female artists, activists, researchers are setting sail: They fight for a right to the port, reclaiming the water as public space, for sea rescue, fair trade, against colonial structures and against the destruction of maritime biotopes. For an alternative, feminist perspective on the sea and the port!
With Hamburg’s first Shefarers Parade on 22 August 2021, we wanted to set an example and build female solidarity in the port.
